controlled pumpy drums
a la Nigel Goderich/Radiohead or Portishead
- stereo compressor on OHs
- key OH compressor off kick drum
- short attack, long release on OH compressor, try an opto
- now kick punches holes thru OHs
- pumping is more audible because OHs hold most harmonic content & cymbals
- timing of kick drum essential to pulling this off

Awesome idea.
Might finally have to get off my butt and learn the Reaper API as this could make for a great plugin.

Most DAWs allow you to key compressors or gate plugins off other tracks. I know ProTools, Logic, & Reaper do… this shouldn’t require anything too fancy.
you can also use this trick on a GTR buss (in a Sex Pistols type guitar driven song, for example) where the GTR buss comp is keyed off the kick drum… it basically pokes holes in the GTRs for the kick to punch thru & both sound louder.
should also be able to do something like this with the gate/expander on an SSL channel… or a drawmer DS-201 (standard studio gate) in “duck” mode. the DS-201 has key inputs on the back and HP/LP filters for fine tuning the key trigger.
works on kick/bass too… duck the bass with the kick fed into the key input. on kick drum you wanna use the click (not the boom) so isolate it with the filters in “key listen” mode… then play with the release till the ducking is either inaudible or stylishly audible and pleasing to the ear.
